Thoughts (June 2005)

  • (June 25, 2005) This will be belatedly posted as soon as we have internet here in Redmond. Today was the MS intern trip to Mt. Rainier, and it was really awesome. We hiked up to the base of the moutain, saw the glaciers on the side, crossed snow fields. The hike had a very steap elevation gain, but it lead to amazing pictures that I will try to "borrow" from people I know. The best part is MS bussed us their, so I didn't have to drive and instead got to watch Harold and Kumar and Hitch. I will try to post the pictures when I get them.

  • (June 14, 2005) The last thought from California. Who knows when I'll get my DSL all set up in Washington. I swam almost a half mile yesterday and shot baskets for almost 2 hours, so it was a good day of exercise. I badly need to improve my swimming strokes. The weather has been in the high 80's, a big contrast to the rain they are getting in Seattle. I think the Giant's youth movement has officially started as they have called up Linden and Foppert. They are going to have a heck of a time getting back to respectability because they have some huge contracts on veteran players that are going to be next to impossible to move. There may be a couple of ugly years ahead.
  • (June 10, 2005) I've completely moved out of Stanford, which was a two day process. Moving is always harder than you hope it will be. My friends and I went to the Giants' game on Wedneday when they lost to the Royals. That was bad, it was cold and rainy and the Giants scored only 1 run. The four of us did down 4 plates of garlic fries, which is quite incredible. Gene has some pictures here, including one of Neal drinking the Coke bottle in left field. Next week is going to be a quick week before I leave for Seattle in 9 days! Hopefully I can kick it with some of my Bay Area friends before heading up north. I should also get a digital camara so I can actually add to the pictures section at some point.

  • (June 6, 2005) Today, DARPA decided to put Stanford's autonomous car into their group of semi-finalists of the race. This is a very remarkable accomplishment, and I have a feeling that Stanford Racing isn't done yet. I have one more final tomorrow, and then it's officially summer. This summer should be a good chance for personal growth, since I'll be moving to Seattle and working at a new company. It's been a great first year of Stanford.

  • (June 4, 2005) For those of you who have been in contact with me recently, you all probably know I'm not the biggest fan of new Giant's closer, Tyler Walker. At the time he was made closer, he was just about the worst relief pitcher on the staff, giving up over two runners per inning. ERA doesn't matter much for relief pitchers, but his ERA is an uncomfortable 5.40, which is not good for any reliever. He had a stretch where he retired 19 of 20 batters faced, which is great, but if you take way those innings, his numbers are unbelievably bad. Recently, he has failed to hold ties numerous times. I realize that relief pitching is not the only reason the Giants have lost 8 in a row, but it sure hasn't helped. They have to win one of the games in tomorrows doubleheader, especially with their best two pitchers going.
  • (June 3, 2005) : Well, this is my shot at a professional looking website. I hope I spelled enough words right to show I have some understanding for the English language. I moved all of the pictures from the New Zealand website to this one. I found some pretty wild pictures (HKN, Marching Band, John Patton's Wedding) that I put up as well. I should pimp the other website in the universe that has my name attached to it, www.stanfordracing.org, for the latest in autonomous robots. The Giants have lost 7 in a row, which is not good. In future "thoughts" columns perhaps I will spout my ideas about the Giants. I'm glad Matt Herges found a new home, he's a stand-up guy. Anyway, if you are reading this, I must have manipulated you in some way to take time out of your busy life to read this, and I appreciate your time and free spell-checking.
